    Identifying drivers and mitigators for congestion and redispatch in the German electric power system with explainable AI

    The transition to a sustainable energy supply challenges the operation of electric power systems in manifold ways. Transmission grid loads increase as wind and solar power are often installed far away from the consumers. In extreme cases, system operators must intervene via countertrading or redispatch to ensure grid stability. In this article, we provide a data-driven analysis of congestion in the German transmission grid. We develop an explainable machine learning model to predict the volume of redispatch and countertrade on an hourly basis. The model reveals factors that drive or mitigate grid congestion and quantifies their impact. We show that, as expected, wind power generation is the main driver, but hydropower and cross-border electricity trading also play an essential role. Solar power, on the other hand, has no mitigating effect. Our results suggest that a change to the market design would alleviate congestion

While some drivers of congestion are known, the magnitude of their impact is unclear, and other factors might still be unidentified. In this study, we conduct a data-driven investigation of congestion in the German transmission grid that reveals drivers and mitigators and quantifies their impact ex-post. Specifically, we used Gradient Boosted Trees and SHAP values to develop an explainable machine learning model for the hourly volume of redispatch and countertrade. As expected, wind power generation in northern Germany emerged as the main driver. Cross-border electricity trading, especially with Denmark, also plays an important role. German solar power has very little effect. Furthermore, our results suggest that run-of-river generation in the alpine region has a strong mitigating effect. Our results support the idea that market design changes, e.g., a bidding zone split, could contribute to congestion prevention

    MICP-L: Mesh-based ICP for Robot Localization using Hardware-Accelerated Ray Casting

    Triangle mesh maps have proven to be a versatile 3D environment representation for robots to navigate in challenging indoor and outdoor environments exhibiting tunnels, hills and varying slopes. To make use of these mesh maps, methods are needed that allow robots to accurately localize themselves to perform typical tasks like path planning and navigation. We present Mesh ICP Localization (MICP-L), a novel and computationally efficient method for registering one or more range sensors to a triangle mesh map to continuously localize a robot in 6D, even in GPS-denied environments. We accelerate the computation of ray casting correspondences (RCC) between range sensors and mesh maps by supporting different parallel computing devices like multicore CPUs, GPUs and the latest NVIDIA RTX hardware. By additionally transforming the covariance computation into a reduction operation, we can optimize the initial guessed poses in parallel on CPUs or GPUs, making our implementation applicable in real-time on a variety of target architectures. We demonstrate the robustness of our localization approach with datasets from agriculture, drones, and automotive domains

    Survival, functional outcome and satisfaction of first revision total knee arthroplasty at a mean eleven-year follow-up.

    PURPOSE Providing long-term outcome data after rTKA and compare one- versus two-stage and septic versus aseptic revisions. METHODS This study represents a single-center retrospective study of first rTKAs performed for any reason with a final follow-up of a minimum of five years. Outcome parameters included stability assessment ROM, radiologic assessment, HSS score, KSS score, OKS score, EQ-5D-3L and VAS. 44 patients were included in the study. Subgroups analysis of one- versus two-stage revision and septic versus aseptic revision was performed. RESULTS The leading causes of rTKA in this mean 11 year follow-up study were aseptic loosening (36%) and periprosthetic joint infection (27%). At the final follow-up, there was a 89% survivorship of the implants. Patients showed a ROM of 114 ± 13°, HSS score of 78 ± 12, KKS objective score of 77 ± 16, KSS expectation and satisfaction score of 32 ± 11, KSS functional activity score of 50 ± 20, OKS of 30 ± 9, VAS of 53 ± 25 and EQ-5D index of 0.649. Functional outcome scores were not significantly altered in the analyzed subgroups. CONCLUSIONS In our 11 years follow-up, we obtained 89% implant survivorship. Measurements regarding functional outcome and pain showed results in the medium range of the respective scores, while patient satisfaction lay in the upper third. No significant differences in outcome scores between one- and two-stage revisions and septic versus aseptic revisions were observed. Level of Evidence Level III, retrospective cohort study

    Indications, clinical outcome and survival of rotating hinge total knee arthroplasty in a retrospective study of 63 primary and revision cases.

    PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to report and compare outcome data of both primary and revision cases using a rotating hinge knee (RHK) implant. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzed 63 cases (19 primary, 44 revisions) at a mean follow-up of 34 ± 8 months after RHK implantation. Outcome parameters were stability, range of motion (ROM), loosening, Hospital of Special Surgery Score (HSS), Knee Society Score (KSS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), EQ-5D-3L, and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for overall function. Revision rates and implant survival are reported. RESULTS Eleven percent showed medio-lateral instability < 5 mm, a mean ROM of 115° ± 17° and radiologic loosening occurred in 8% (2% symptomatic). PROMS showed the following results: HSS 79 ± 18, KSS 78 ± 27, OKS 26 ± 10, EQ-5D index 0.741 ± 0.233 and VAS 70 ± 20. Primary cases revealed better outcomes in HHS (p = .035) and OKS (p = 0.047). KSS, EQ-5D index and VAS did not differ between primary and revision cases (p = 0.070; p = 0.377; p = 0.117). Revision rate was 6.3% with an implant survival of 96.8%. CONCLUSIONS RHK arthroplasty can be performed with good clinical outcome and low revision rate in revision and complex primary cases. RHK is an option in cases where standard arthroplasty and even implants with a higher degree of constraint have reached their limits. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III, retrospective cohort study

    Total scattering reveals the hidden stacking disorder in a 2D covalent organic framework

    Interactions between extended π-systems are often invoked as the main driving force for stacking and crystallization of 2D organic polymers. In covalent organic frameworks (COFs), the stacking strongly influences properties such as the accessibility of functional sites, pore geometry, and surface states, but the exact nature of the interlayer interactions is mostly elusive. The stacking mode is often identified as eclipsed based on observed high symmetry diffraction patterns. However, as pointed out by various studies, the energetics of eclipsed stacking are not favorable and offset stacking is preferred. This work presents lower and higher apparent symmetry modifications of the imine-linked TTI-COF prepared through high- and low-temperature reactions. Through local structure investigation by pair distribution function analysis and simulations of stacking disorder, we observe random local layer offsets in the low temperature modification. We show that while stacking disorder can be easily overlooked due to the apparent crystallographic symmetry of these materials, total scattering methods can help clarify this information and suggest that defective local structures could be much more prevalent in COFs than previously thought. A detailed analysis of the local structure helps to improve the search for and design of highly porous tailor-made materials

    FIRST INSIGHTS INTO THE MIGRATION PATTERN OF AN UPLAND GOOSE (CHLOEPHAGA PICTA) BASED ON SATELLITE TRACKING

    Detailed knowledge of the migratory strategies is important to understand the ecology and evolution of migration and the conservation of migratory birds The Argentinean federal government declared sheldgeese (Chloephaga spp.) pests in 1930, claiming that they reduce crop yield. Currently sheldgeese have suffered severe reductions in their populations and are the focus of serious conservation concern. From September to April they breed in southern Patagonia (Argentina and Chile) while from May to September they winter mainly in the southern Pampas (central east Argentina). The precise knowledge of their migratory routes is essential to ensure protection of necessary resources and sites needed on their annual journeys. Here, by using a satellite transmitter for the first time we unravel the migration route of an Upland Goose (Chloephaga picta), a species endemic to southern South America with an unknown migration strategy. We received data for 121 days (from September 2014 to January 2015). During this time, the bird migrated 1485 km from the wintering grounds in Buenos Aires Province to the breeding area in Santa Cruz province, Patagonia. Part of the migration route was over the sea. The largest displacement was 817 km in 19 hours, representing a minimum mean speed of 43 km h-1
